ลักษณะทั่วไป

ชะม่วง เป็นไม้ยืนต้นขนาดเล็ก ถึงขนาดกลาง ใบรูปวงรี เนื้อใบหนา

และเหนียว ผิวใบเป็นมัน ดอกแยก เพศอยู่คนละต้น ดอกตัวผู้ออกเป็นกระจุก กลีบดอกสีเหลือง หรือชมพูถึงแดง ดอกตัวเมียเป็นดอกเดี่ยว ผลเป็นผลสด รูปค่อนข้างกลม เมื่อสุกจะมีสีเหลืองแกมส้มหม่น

ดอกและผลมีรสเผ็ดร้อน แก้เจ็บคอ ทำให้เสมหะแห้ง ช่วยย่อยอาหาร และขับลมในลำไส้
