ลักษณะทั่วไป
เป็นไม้เลื้อยมีทั้งต้นตัวผู้ และต้นตัวเมีย ลำต้นมีข้อและป้องชัดเจน ใบรูปไข่หรือรี ดอกออกเป็นช่อ ผลรวมกันบนช่อยาว 5-15 ซม. รูปทรงกลมขนาด 4-5 ซม.แก่แล้วมีเมล็ดสีดำภายในมี 2 เมล็ด ส่วนที่นิยมใช้เป็นยา ได้แก่ ใบ ผล เมล็ด และ ดอกสรรพคุณพริกไทย
สรรพคุณทางยา
-ใบแก้ลมจุกเสียด แน่น ท้องอืดเฟ้อ
- ผลที่ยังไม่สุกนำมาเป็นเครื่องเทศ แต่งกลิ่นอาหาร
-เมล็ดมีฤทธิ์ขับลม ขับเสมหะ ขับเหงื่อ ขับปัสสาวะ บำรุงธาตุ อาหารไม่ย่อยโดยใช้เมล็ด 0.5-1กรัม ประมาณ 15-20 เมล็ด บดเป็นผงชงรับประทาน 1 ครั้ง
-ดอกใช้แก้ตาแดงถนอมอาหารหลายชนิด เช่น มะม่วง
